In lay man terms, a water cooler is a mechanical device that not only cools drinking water but also dispenses it. Water coolers are generally of two categories depending on how they acquire and keep their water supply. One category is called the bottle-less water cooler which is physically connected to a constant water supply, while the second type is called the bottled water cooler which requires constant input of drinking water mostly in bottles.
The most popular make of the water cooler is the one mounted on a wall and connected to a building's main water supply. This enables a continuous water supply. Electricity is then supplied to power an in-built refrigeration unit which cools the incoming water to a preset temperature. Most water cooler units run to a building's sewage or waste disposal manholes a requirement which enables them to dispose off unused water.
Modern versions are freestanding models especially in countries that abhor drinking water coming directly from the tap. Newer free-standing designs are however more temporally and basically involve large bottles of drinking water, usually pre-treated, being placed spout-down in a dispensing machine. Installing the bottle is easy because it involves tipping a closed bottle upside down in a dispenser frame, puncturing the bottle cap with a provided tool and then the water flows into a machine's internal water reservoir.
Water cooler machines are available in ranging size and capacity. Floor-mounted water cooler units are meant for heavier use. The bottled water is obtained from vendors delivering regularly to a household or company premises, where the empty water bottles are freely exchanged for the full ones, at a fee.
In actual use, some water coolers refrigerate drinking water to chilling temperatures or room temperatures while others can heat the water for brewing tea, chocolate, or even instant coffee.
